Cornwall Welcomes Spring with Magnolia Blooms

It has long been claimed that spring arrives a few weeks earlier in Cornwall than elsewhere in the country, so Cornwall has created its own spring story...

The differing signs of spring

Whenever I think about the month of March, the proverb “comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” is the first thing that ‘springs’ to mind. The first half of the month is the tail end of winter and can still be biting cold with heavy downpours and dare I say it, the occasional dusting of snow. But as we drift towards the end of March, spring arrives and along with it comes new growth in the flowerbeds, animals waking from their winter slumber and more sunshine and blue skies up above.

The spring equinox this year lands on March 20th. Astronomically speaking this marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere as the sun crosses over the equator line, heading north. After this date, the Northern Hemisphere begins to be tilted more toward the sun, resulting in increased daylight hours and warming temperatures (the opposite takes place in the Southern Hemisphere).

Cornwall's microclimate status

In contrast, the meteorological calendar is based on annual temperature cycles and dictates that spring starts every year on the first of March. Neither the astronomical or the metrological calendar is perfect, and they don’t account for some years being warmer than others and certain locations having their own microclimates, as we do down here in Cornwall.

Cornwall has the mildest and sunniest climate in the UK thanks to its oceanic setting and the influence of the gulf stream which hugs the coastline acting like a hot water bottle. It has long been argued that spring arrives in Cornwall a few weeks earlier than elsewhere in the country, and so Cornwall has created its own spring story.

“The moment the Cornish magnolias flower, Spring has arrived”

Each year, six champion magnolia campbellii trees are monitored across six different great gardens in Cornwall, to record the date that they come into full bloom. The head gardeners from each location send daily reports of their magnolias and as soon as all six champion magnolias have at least 50 blooms on each, spring has arrived in Cornwall!

In 2021, spring was declared on Friday 26th February which is nearly a month before the astronomical first day of spring (20th March). This year (2022), spring arrived even earlier on 22nd February meaning that by now all six champion magnolia trees have already shed their fuzzy winter jackets that encase the beautiful pink blooms and March is the perfect time to go and see them in full show.

Planting your own magnolia
